Honors Program

Honors in the Kahlert School of Computing

The Honors College offers students an interdisciplinary academic experience alongside their Computing major. Honors students take small, discussion-based courses, participate in learning communities, and complete an Honors thesis with a faculty mentor. Many Honors courses can also fulfill general education or bachelor’s degree requirements.

Honors Requirements

Requirements depend on when a student enters the Honors College:

  • First-Year Pathway: 24 Honors credits, required learning communities, and an Honors thesis
  • Upper-Division Pathway: 15 Honors credits, two years of learning communities, and an Honors thesis

Students must maintain at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA to graduate with University Honors.

Honors Thesis Options

School of Computing students may complete their Honors thesis through one of two pathways:

  • Research thesis: Students complete an individual research project with a faculty mentor and take CS 4940 followed by CS 4999.
  • Capstone-based thesis: Students complete the regular capstone sequence, CS 4000 and CS 4500, and take CS 4998 to develop their individual Honors thesis.

Students should begin discussing thesis topics and potential faculty mentors before their final year.

Planning Your Honors Degree

Honors requirements are completed in addition to the requirements for your Computing major. Careful planning can allow Honors courses to also fulfill university requirements and minimize additional coursework.

Students should meet with a School of Computing academic advisor to review their Honors pathway, remaining requirements, and thesis timeline. Additional information about the Honors curriculum is available through the Honors College.
