Foundational Courses and Academic Requirements

Computer Science majors must complete the foundational coursework before enrolling in Kahlert School of Computing courses at the 3000 level or above.

Introduction to Programming

Students must complete one of the following programming options:

Standard Programming Sequence

Complete both courses:

  • CS 1400: Introduction to Computer Programming
  • CS 1410: Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming

Accelerated Programming Course

Complete:

  • CS 1420: Accelerated Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming

Students complete either the CS 1400 and CS 1410 sequence or CS 1420. They do not need to complete both options.

Choosing Your First Programming Course

Not sure whether to take the CS 1400 and CS 1410 sequence or the accelerated CS 1420 course?

Additional Foundational Courses

Students must also complete:

  • CS 2420: Introduction to Algorithms and Data Structures – must receive a B- or higher
  • MATH 1210: Calculus I – must receive a C or higher

Letter Grades

All courses used to satisfy Computer Science degree requirements must be taken for a letter grade. Courses taken with a credit/no-credit option may not be used toward these requirements.

Minimum Grades

  • Most CS, mathematics, and science requirements must be completed with a grade of C- or better.
  • Certain courses require a higher minimum grade. For example, CS 2420 requires a grade of B- or better.
  • A MATH course used as a prerequisite for a more advanced MATH course must be completed with a grade of C or better.

Students should review their degree requirement sheet for the minimum grade required in each course.

To remain in good academic standing with the Kahlert School of Computing, students must maintain:

  • A minimum 2.5 cumulative University GPA
  • A minimum 2.5 technical GPA

Students whose cumulative or technical GPA falls below 2.5 may be placed on academic probation.
