Well, there are some who would disagree.  Nothing in
Scheme precludes fast number crunching. 
Someone...err...Brad Lucier? has some code in Gambit
that performs equivalently to C for matrix ops.  Now
to get really funky, someone (with copious free time)
should implement the functional arrays and associated
optimisations found in SAC
(http://www.informatik.uni-kiel.de/~sacbase/) in
Scheme.  That would kick-ass!
