Mixed Uncertainties Modeling and Applications

Abstract: Uncertainty is increasingly encountered and attracting great attention in the scientific community. Very often in practice, data are expressed in soft forms such as intervals, histograms, functions, and probability distributions, which are generally called soft data. Separately, probabilities are also described as sets or intervals to express subjective probability under uncertainties, leading to the concept of soft probability. In this talk, I will introduce uncertainty modeling with soft statistics and probability, its associated mathematical foundation, and a few inferential models developed under this framework. Two applications in financial econometrics, one on regression and one on volatility modeling, will be presented.

Bio: Dr. Yan Sun is an Associate Professor and Assistant Head for Graduate Studies in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Utah State University. She obtained her PhD in Mathematics (with a concentration in Statistics) from The University of Cincinnati in 2011 and has joined Utah State since then. Her research interests lie in the areas of spatial statistics, time series, and soft statistics and probability. She has been primarily supported through her interdisciplinary research by ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers), NCSEA (National Council of Structural Engineers Association), and Bureau of Reclamation.
