Biography

I was an assistant professor in the School of Computing (formerly Department of Computer Science) at the University of Utah (in Salt Lake City, UT) from August 1997 through June 2003. I received tenure and promotion to associate professor effective July 2003. I resigned my position at the University and joined Google, Inc. in April, 2004.

From 1995 to 1997 I was a postdoc in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington (in Seattle, WA), where I was a member of the SPIN project with Brian Bershad.

I received my PhD in September 1995 from the MIT Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, where I worked in the Laboratory for Computer Science. MIT is in Cambridge, MA, which is a great place to live. My advisors were Frans Kaashoek and Bill Weihl. My undergraduate years were also spent at MIT; I received my SM and SB degrees there in May 1988 through the VI-A program.

Before that, I grew up mostly in Poughkeepsie, NY.
