Model sizes are reaching billions of polygons which become difficult
to render and edit interactively.
Different hardware renders at different rates and we may like to
operate interactively on any hardware.
Models of such sizes are also difficult to display remotely, which
leads a desire for progressive transmission.
Modeling programs and designers often create meshes with
arbitrary-sided polygons which may be non-planar.
