Four Weeks in Beijing
Home Week One Week Two Week Three

Overview

This web page is try to document the four weeks I spent in Beijing during the winter vacation of 1999-2000. I not only got to celebrate the new millennium in a strange and unfamiliar land but I learned a lot about a culture that is very different than my own.

I did not stay in hotels are participate in tours. Instead I stayed with a Chinese family and toured the city with a Chinese friend. I was not subjected to any time or money pressure that would normally be associated with going as a real tourist. Instead, I was able to experience Chinese culture first hand, real day to day life. I would like to thank all of those that helped me in this trip, though my Chinese writing skills right now could not begin to express my gratitude.

I have broken the web into four pages for each week. I will skip information that can be found in tour books and the web on popular tourist destinations. Indeed, those places are great and should be experienced but are easily done in a tour group. I will instead concentrate on cultural differences, personal experiences and just day to day life.
