Interests

My interests are many and varied, however I will confine this list to things not relating to academics or my major.

I like to write poetry. Here is a sample of some of my poems. I sometimes actually like to read poetry, too. Here you will find some poems by the late Australian poet Henry Lawson.

I also like to sing. You may have seen me driving along singing while intently staring at the road ahead, making sure to check my rear view mirror every 10 seconds or so, and signaling properly and all that. Or, you may have seen me in the lab, looking like I'm about to burst out singing (which has almost happened a couple of times, unless you count singing under my breath, in which case it has happened quite a few times).

I used to play the trumpet and the baritone. I started playing the trumpet in fifth grade, and stopped in tenth grade. That is when I started playing the baritone. It is also when I stopped. I gave up band for track. I am looking into buying (or renting-to-own) a baritone in the not too distant future.

I ran track in ninth and tenth grades. I ran cross country in eleventh and twelfth grades. I plan to start running on a regular basis again this summer. I intend to run a marathon at some point in my life, but I think I'll wait until I'm 30 to decide when.

I recently started playing tennis, and I also like to play racquetball. I am thinking about taking up fencing sometime (and I might even stop thinking and do it).

Okay, tonight (06 Nov 02) is the night: I will go fencing tonight, and see how I like it.

I like to do things outdoors: hiking, camping, canoeing, etc. I have not done any of these as much as I would like for the past few years. However, I have started to do more hiking in the last two or three weeks. It's great to be getting back into it. I just have one problem: I've got no hiking buddies. This is only a problem when I want to hike trails that are not strictly safe (i.e., the same way a sinusoid is not strictly monotonic)... like Moss Ledge (up Big Cottonwood Canyon) or Rocky Mouth (accessible from Wasatch Drive).
