Mount Olympus, October 2006
As fall wraps up this year, I thought I'd hike up the lower portion of
Mount Olympus, the jagged peak directly bordering Salt Lake valley. 2
years ago I hiked to the top; it was my first real scramble and I was
so scared of a mishap on the way down that I called Jean and asked her
to take out life insurance on me.
Almost immediately, you get great views of Lone Peak and downtown Salt Lake City.
Sometimes para-sailers like to play around on the slopes of Olympus.
About 1/4th of the way up is a clearing with some shade; a good place to rest.
View of the summit, the craggy peak just slightly to the right of the
center. Depth perspective matters -- it looks a lot bigger in real life.
I wimp out and turn around at the streambed, about the halfway point (in miles) for the Olympus hike.
Here's a shot of me just a bit above the streambed.
And some nice orange fall foliage, with great salt lake in the distance.
