On the night of 2-3 July 1998, Lieutenant XXX was the commander of an ambush party deployed at Gormantar Gali in Kupwara Sector in Jammu and Kashmir. At 0445 hours on 3 July 1998, spotting a group of six militants moving in the forest, he charged at them. During this operation he came under accurate, intense and heavy volume of fire of the militants from all sides. Despite this, he deployed his men tactically and brought down prophylactic fire on the militants. Soon the militants started fleeing. He then crawled to a flank to cut off the escape routes of the militants. One militant brought down a heavy barrage of UMG fire on him. He rushed towards the militant, totally unnerving him and shot him dead at almost point blank range. When one of the remaining militants started running and firing on the officer, he chased and also shot dead the fleeing militant. The operation finally led to the killing of nine militants and recovery of huge quantity of arms and ammunition.

The photo above is of a friend of mine recieving The Shaurya Chakra ("Valor medal", approximately), from the current President of India, K. R. Narayan. I have been asked to disfigure the face for security reasons(?). Don't know why I put this up on my page... but I was extremely moved when I first read the citation...
