Setting the lower threshold allows us to exclude values with lower gradients. In this example we have emphasized the sinuses which have a unique position in a two dimensional transfer function. This is right above the values for soft tissue. We would not be able to extract the sinuses if we were not able to precisely specify this lower threshold.

As you can imagine, without interactivity, many of the techniques just described would be of little use.
