Now that we've added these dimensions to the transfer function, it helps to understand the relationship between the quantities on each axis.

For all of our work, the features of interest are boundaries between regions of relatively homogeneous value. As we traverse such a boundary, the data value increases monotonically, while the first derivative has a maximum, and the second derivative has a zero crossing, either of which can be used to locate the position of the boundary center.
