From a conceptual standpoint, this research is about transfer functions in direct volume rendering. I [Gordon] will talk about the role of the transfer function, and the benefits and drawbacks of extending it to two or three dimensions.

But from a practical standpoint, this research is about a system which makes volume rendering with multi-dimensional transfer functions fast and convenient. Joe will present a system of widgets and interaction techniques which help the user find effective multi-dimensional transfer functions in a natural process of exploration, specification, and refinement. He'll also talk about the graphics hardware which makes all of this happen at interactive rates, and then wrap up.
