I'm an avid skier. I've been doing alpine/downhill since I was six and haven't missed a season. I've never raced on my alpine boards, but did for 11 years on cross-country skis (read on). I've also dabbled in telemark but still prefer my alpine boards. And I've recently taken up snowboarding, which is awesome on a good powder day. Check out some of my equipment.
One of my reasons for attending the University of Utah was to be on the ski team. I joined the team my freshman year as a walk-on and competed from 1990-94 with the team. I am currently retired from competition, but will resume when the desire returns.
I began skiing in the 6th grade (11 years old). I joined my High School ski team the next year and only finished one race, but I was hooked. I continued skiing through high school, twice winning the sectional championship. I qualified three times for the Empire State Winter Games where the state championships were held. My best finish was a 15th my senior year.
1989 was also the first year I qualified for the Junior National Championships that were held in Biwabik, MN. I had little chance to qualify based on results and needed an exceptional race. I came through with my best race ever, finishing third in a race in Old Forge and making the team. I returned to the Junior Nationals in 1990 (Steamboat Springs, CO) and 1991 (Anchorage, AK). I also competed as a junior at the National Championships in 1991 held in Lake Placid, NY.
In college, I raced a number of invitationals in such places as Winter Park (CO), Eldora (CO), Steamboat Springs (CO), Laramie (WY), Crested Butte (CO), Pagosa Springs (CO), Alberquerque (NM), and Santa Fe (NM). My best race was in Gunnison, CO, a 10km skate race in 1993 where I finished 16th.
