The finish line of my first (and only) marathon. On June 6, I ran City Loppet in Linkoping, Sweden. I ran the 10k and finished in a personal best of 37.30. It had been raining (no, pouring) just before the race, but that cooled things off and made it nice for running (minus the puddles). I can through the 5k at 17.30 and knew I was having a good race. I lost a bit of time in the second 5k, but not too bad for me. I haven't seen the final results so I don't know my place, but I think it was around 9th or 10th in the mens recreational division.
I also participated in Sola Stafetten on May 5 and 6, 1995. This is a relay from Gothenburg to Karlstad in Sweden. The total distance is 266 kilometers (167 miles). There were 76 teams participating, including many from Sweden, but also some from the Netherlands and Germany. Each team could have up to 31 racers (one for each leg), but most averaged about 25. I ran with the LSIF "Lingon & Blabar" team, a group that the student sports organization at Linkoping University put together. We finished in 5th place. Since we were only 25 people, some of us ran more than one leg. I ran 9.3 km on Friday in 34.57. The next day I ran 6.0 km in 19.20. I was very happy with both times, but especially the 6 km because it was after only 3 hours of sleep. You see, the race starts at 14.30 and runs until about 22.30. Then there is a mandatory break for everyone to "rest", but the race resumes at a cheery 3.30. The finish is at about 16.30 that day. In all, it's a really fun relay for everyone.
If you know of anything like this in the U.S., please let me know by email at jlorenz@cs.utah.edu. Thanks!
I ran the 1995 Kingston Classic on April 9 while visiting my family New York. I finished in 38:29.5 which was a PR for me (at the time)! That was good for 101st place.
I also ran cross-country my senior year.
The picture is from the Desert News Marathon in Salt Lake City, UT. I ran it in 1991. I was doing ok until about 19 miles but my legs decided they were done. I struggled to the finish, but it was painful. I hope to try it again in 1996.
I have made a list of some of my personal records. Let me know if you have run any of the same races!
