Warp Zones

If I get enough clicks on the google ads, I'll be much more likely to complete this website.

Warp Zones are apparently the "Super Secret" levels that Chronic Logic promised us.  They appear to be accessible by touching special portkey type objects in difficult-to-find secret passages.  Death in one of these levels appears to teleport you immediately back into the "real world," sometimes making it difficult to finish the levels.

Chronic Logic cited various old school Nintendo games as sources of inspiration for Gish, and this is where it shows.  This warp zone is pretty much an exact replica of the first dungeon level of Super Mario Bros, from the music all the way down to reduced graphical resolution.
Indeed, even the phrase "Warp Zone" was (to my knowledge) first used in Super Mario Bros, when describing the secret area at the end of this level.  If you touch the pipe opening in this screenshot, you'll be transported back to the Sewers of Dross.  However, if you crawl up over the top of the screen you will find ...
... three additional pipes that will warp you to (left to right):
Jon Richardson pointed out where the extra life is on this level.  Break the block where Gish is hanging in this picture.  The extra life and all amber pieces are exactly where they (extra lives and coins, respectively) were on the Mario Bros game.  Sometimes you won't be able to see the item before you get it, but if you watch your point and life meters you'll see them increase.

Isle of the Dead

I'm not certain as to why they named the first warp level with a number and this one with a name.  This level is very difficult to beat, and made even more so by the fact that you only get one shot before you're pushed into the next level.

Jon Richardson sent the following email and screenshots.  He later told me when he says "roadblock" he is talking about the spots where skulls completely block your path.  The "first" roadblock he mentions is actually the second, and so on.  I'll try to clean this up later.

Beating the isle of the dead:
1)practice lots in the gish level editor -the level is called death.lvl -type it into the level name, press enter -press f7 -press f1 -if you die, resist the urge to do the normal thing.
Instead, push f5, and it will reset

2)take it slow
-don't go heavy at the beginning. Fall normally and stick to the right wall last moment to aim you squarely at the head of the monster beneath, so you don't get to the left of it. The ghost will hit you once during the fall.
-wait for the ghost to get close, then proceed slowly (I was surprised at how slow you can go) as long as you make steady progress, the ghost won't hit you -get the gish drops that are on the floor, except for the one before the first fairly big climb... that one is prone to get you stuck. The rest, you can fall just to the left of the pit where the drop lies, so that a little bit of gish goes into the hole. This can actually give you a speed boost if you need it.

3) Use sticky sparingly. Use slippery to help you fall through certain spots.

4) The first total roadblock: use the gish drop pit to fling you quickly near the top of the wall. As described before, make gish land just to the left of the pit, with a bit of him going into it, then jump.
Push heavy and sticky when you hit the wall to push it as far as possible. A few more jerks with heavy while hanging on the wall should send it toppling. Ride it down while staying heavy. You'll probably get hit about two times.

5) The next decent challenge is the part where gish must ascend up through a fairly narrow place while an enemy is prone to drop through it. This is the first part where I would recommend haste. Approach fast enough that the creature doesn't start before you arrive. Jump from the ground and don't use sticky.

6) The next total roadblock: This one's nasty, it is created by a creature and a loose skull near the top of a wall. Use what you can as a ramp to get you barreling at the monster, then push heavy. This should pop him right out. This should put you just above the loose skull. Do whatever necessary to stay above this skull, don't try to pull it out from underneath. Instead, try to wriggle from above a little into the hole left by the monster, using soft a little, then push hard. This should push the skull out as well. You'll probably get hit about 3 times.

beating the isle of the dead:
If you push CTL-ALT-Delete and end the gish task while playing the isle of the dead, the game will make the mistake of thinking you beat it the next time you resume your game.

If you beat the isle of the dead either legitimately or by the above cheat, you will meet satan in his lair....

[Note from the editor: I just can't bring myself to spoil this one any more.  If you want to find out what happens next, buy the game and play it yourself!]

In either case, you begin playing again in 3-5.
