Professional Background:

After completing my PhD in Electrical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University in 1970, I went to work at Sperry Univac (now Unisys), where I was involved in the design of communications processors and peripheral devices for 12 years. Between 1982 and 2006 I was responsible for administering the undergraduate Computer Science program and teaching core CS classes. During many of those years I also directed the Computer Engineering program.

I retired from the University of Utah in June 2006, and since then have been enjoying more time with family and more miles on skis, foot, and bike in the mountains around the West.

Among my most satisfying accomplishments at the University were the High School (Summer) Computing Institute, which I initiated in 1990 and directed through 2002, and the Utah High School Programming Contest, which I started in 1991 and organized until my retirement in 2006.

I couldn't have asked for a more rewarding career, thanks to a most supportive faculty and literally hundreds of highly motivated students!

Personal Life:

Much of my spare time continues to be occupied with cross country skiing in winter, trail running and hiking in summer. Cross country skiing interests range from back country skiing to track racing. I've been involved with The Utah Nordic Alliance (TUNA) and the Wasatch Citizens Series for many years. Also, a friend and I have written Wasatch Tours, a 3-volume guide to ski touring opportunities in the Wasatch Mountains.
