Assembly instructions for the manually operated hypercube slicer dicer

  1. Print out the postscript file hcube.ps (20 pages).
  2. Cut the pages in half with a paper cutter or scissors- it is not crucial that they are cut exactly in half.
  3. The pages are all numbered, so the stack of 40 frames can be easily assembled in the correct order, going from "1" at the bottom of the stack to "40" at the top.
  4. Align the frames according to their lower right hand corners. This is because these corners were originally corners of the 8.5x11 page, and are not corners created by (perhaps sloppy) cutting of the pages in half.
  5. It helps to fan the pages a bit in order to make flipping smoother. To fan them: grab the lower edge of the frame stack, flex it upwards (making the stack concave down), grab the upper edge of the frame stack and release the lower edge, unflex, repeat. This introduces a little horizontal distance between pages so that your thumb or thumbnail can have better control over the flipping.
  6. You may want to staple the pages in their fanned state to make this toy a little more permanent. Then again, maybe you should recycle this rather un-ecological display form once you're done. Don't worry- mpegs of the same animation are coming soon, in color no less.
