There are a number of possible directions for further work. One of the most important is the calculation of the position function, since that is what the user relies on to have captured information about the boundaries in the volume. Also, since we saw that a boundary in the volume is always manifested by a particular shape in the histogram volume, it makes sense to try an object recognition technique from computer vision, such as the Hough transform. We're also interested in extending the technique to non-scalar data, such as multi-echo MRI, where the user might be interested in seeing material boundaries. It would also be interesting to see if the basic ideas can be extended to more general vector viz problems.
