Now our paper presents a new method for the problem of setting the
transfer function in direct volume rendering, but I should point out
its scope. First, we're dealing with transfer functions which set
opacity only; we call these simply opacity functions. Second, we're
dealing with scalar data only, specifically, scalar data where the
goal is the visualize the boundaries of regions of relatively constant
value. This is characteristic of medical, or biological datasets
where there's some material which tends to assume approximately the
same data value everywhere in the scan.
