... trial and error! Or at least how its done most of the time now -
because the parameter space of all possible transfer functions is just
too large, and nothing about the usual interface for setting the
transfer function is at all constrained by the underlying data.
So there's little intuitive relationship
between an adjustment made to the transfer function and the resulting
change in the image. For example, the goal here was to visualize
the skin surface, and you can see that it took a few tries to get
it right.
