Because transfer functions are central to this paper I should start by
explaining exactly what I mean by the term. Transfer functions are
really what make a volume dataset visible in a direct volume rendering
- because its the transfer function that maps from the original values
in the dataset to renderable optical properties, like color and
opacity , and then the results of this mapping are compositing to
produe the final image. Now the hard part of this process, I think,
is here, because having a good transfer function is essential
to producing an informative rendering. So how do you find a good
transfer function, one that shows you the interesting structure in the
volume without obscuring with other things you don't care about.
