If you're not going to reduce the tensor down to its principal eigenvector, you can use the standard two-dimensional array of ellipsoids. This is very straightforward. It's a complete representation, and all the tensor information is there. You can actually get a pretty good sense from it of what's going on in this slice- picking out patterns of similar direction.
