
This is a CT scan of a thumb, with colors from flow-line curvature. The opacity functions are step functions, so we're seeing isosurfaces, at these values.Now these holes are the problem: they are not a material boundary. They're from the bone being very thin here, compared to here.
And notice that those holes are lined by very high flowline curvature, and in fact their formation is actually foreshadowed by flowline curvature here. Note that there are high surface curvature spots with low flowline curvature: like this edge here, or the surface of this round bone.
These pictures end up being a visualization of the fact that its quite hard to find a CT isosurface that reliably shows the bone surface.
