Cooperative Education and Internship Program

The School of Computing Cooperative Education and Internship Program (CEIP) seeks to provide students with practical experience to complement class-oriented learning. The industrial exposure that participants obtain is beneficial to students who hope to work in industry. In most cases, CEIP experiences will occur at locations removed from campus, with a possibility of being out of state. These opportunities are available with employers who have agreed to participate with the University of Utah. (Note: Students are required to find their own internship, and should check the CS Jobs board for possibilities.)

Details of the CEIP

Full Time Nature of the Internship

The CEIP is generally for students who are interning full time (without additional academic course work) during the summer (or when spending a semester away from campus). Students should expect to be working 40 hours per week.

Part time internships are usually not eligible for the program. Exceptions to this can be made for part time employment over two consecutive semesters, or for reduced credit. Requests for exceptions must be submitted to the CEIP faculty and are not guaranteed to be approved.

CEIP Paperwork and Enrollment

Once an internship has been obtained and all pre-enrollment forms completed, a student must request admittance into the CEIP Program. Please familiarize yourself with the Pre-Enrollment Guidelines.

All signed and filled out paperwork should be brought to the CEIP faculty member for approval. (You should receive a copy of all completed forms for your records).

Course Credit

Credit for the program may be used toward a CS elective credit.

CEIP internships for less than 3 credit hours can be paired with other one/two credit options in the CS program (e.g., industry forum, TA workshop) to form a full electives.

To receive credit, the student must satisfactorily complete all 13 weekly assignments, including having a midterm and final review, and produce a final report. Failure to complete all required work will result in a greatly reduced grade and likely failure of the class.

CEIP Director

If you are interested in the program, see the Director of Undergraduate Studies: H. James de St. Germain (germain@cs.utah.edu).

Please Note: If you will be missing more than a semester classes (not counting summer) due to CEIP, please speak with the SoC departmental academic advisor before the semester begins.
