Graphics
- Glassner's
Graphics - Here is a page with all sorts of information about
Andrew Glassner's work in computer graphics.
Fun Links
- Good Eats Fan
Page - Here you can find all sorts of information about Alton Brown and his awesome
cooking show called Good Eats.
- SCUMM-VM -
A virtual machine for games like Monkey Island and Full Throttle for
Win32, Linux, and Mac platforms.
- My Funny Pages - A list of links to the comics I like.
- The Funny
Pages - A place where you can view links to a whole bunch of
comics.
Windows Utilities
- Cygwin -
This provides an emulation layer for unix like programs for Windows.
This is a must have if you do any kind of work on unix style machines.
My DOS shell days are OVER! Besides this I can actually compile
programs with decent compiler (GCC) and editor (Emacs).
- PuTTy
- A simple ssh terminal. Also has scp.
- PuTTyCyg - A patched version of
PuTTy that can open a shell for cygwin use (tutorial).
- Zone
Alarm - Zone Labs provides a
free fire wall. I've found it to be a great piece of software.
- Scanner -
Displays disk usage as a pie chart. Has the ability to zoom in and
inspect sub directories.
- Atomic
Clock - This is a simple a application that will sync your PC
with the atomic clock. Very useful considering the quartz clocks in
your computer are pretty inaccurate
- Pidgin - A
multi protocol IM client that supports ICQ, AOL
IM, Yahoo IM, MSN and others. It works on Windows and Linux! Look for
AdiumX on Mac which builds on the
same underlying software as pidgin (libpurple). Also look for the Off-the-record plugin for
more secure messaging. AdiumX supports it out of the box.
- TClockEx -
Taskbar Clock Enhancement: allows fully customizable display of date,
time, and system resources and has a nifty mini-calendar that can
popup. This piece of software has ceased to be developed since 2000
and looks horrible in the default WinXP theme.
- DateInTray -
TClockEx looks really ugly in WinXP with the new theme as it can't
handle transparency and wants to use the traditional theme. This
little app puts the date in the system tray with a nifty calendar that
pops up when you click on it. Just what I needed.
- MPlayer
install for Windows - MPlayer is an awesome media player
that supports tons of formats. The default player for windows really
sucks. This installation will install all you need to enjoy the
greatness of MPlayer.
Linux
- Dual
Booting - Explains how to setup your NT boot loader to run linux.
This is based off of this
previous document.
- Gaim - An instant messenger for
Linux which has support for all the basic types (AIM (Oscar), ICQ,
Yahoo!, MSN, IRC, Jabber, Napster, Zephyr, and TOC).
Mozilla
I really like the Mozilla
browser. It is standards complient and runs similarly on both
Linux and Windows. Here are some extras that I have added to my
installation.
- Mouse Gestures - This
extension allows you to navigate and do different things just by
wiggling your mouse is a certain way. I'm still trying to learn how
to use it, but as I'm getting better this is becoming cooler and
cooler.
- Google
Bar - This is a Google Bar made for Mozilla and Firebird which has
the same functionality as the one made by Google for IE. A must
have.
- mozdev.org
- The best place to get all the great enhancements for mozilla.
- Preference
Toolbar - Installs a preference toolbar to Mozilla which has some
nice features (i.e. ability to turn off flash, send a different UA
string, and block all images).
- Spell
Checker - Previous to version 1.5 Mozilla didn't come with a spell
checker (you should really upgrade anyway).
You should also check out Firebird. It
works great as a stand alone browser.
Mics
- Shields UP - This is an
online program to test how secure your system is to outsiders. I
learned about this great firewall for Windows called Zone Alarm from these guys (make
sure you get the free one if you qualify).
- VI help -
Offeres some help on commands used for VI. I need this, because I use
emacs and I already know those commands. :) http://www.eng.hawaii.edu/Tutor/vi.html#summary
