Students in the School of Computing have various options for fun and rewarding experiences beyond the classroom. Many of our students find that pursing one or more of the following opportunities is an excellent way of engaging with classmates and faculty, as well as, furthering their own professional development.

Research Opportunities

One advantage of being an undergraduate at a top research university is the opportunity to participate in cutting edge research. This not only gives exposure to issues beyond those normally covered in course work, it also allows contact with faculty outside a normal classroom setting. Undergraduates have been and continue to be involved in much of the research within the School of Computing.First year students are eligible to apply for the Engineering Scholars Program, which provide an excellent way to get introduced to research early in the academic program.

Honors in Engineering Program

The Honors in Engineering Program in the College of Engineering is designed to provide a challenging, individualized educational experience to high achieving students and to promote life-long learning throughout their careers. The objective is to challenge top students by offering them access to more advanced levels of study, to facilitate the fullest possible use of their creative abilities, to encourage a sustained interest in advanced education and basic research, as well as to foster leadership and fellowship within the engineering community. Honors in Engineering is an undergraduate student honors program that is an option and not mandatory. Students can also receive Departmental Honors and/or University Honors in addition to Honors in Engineering.

Engineering Floor at the Residence Halls

The College of Engineering Living and Learning Community in the Residence Halls offers residents the opportunity to live with other students in the College of Engineering who share their academic and career goals. First year students in particular will appreciate the benefit of living in a community which fosters academic excellence within the rigorous engineering curriculum.

Office of Student Affairs

The University of Utah Office of Student Affairs provides a wide variety of resources to help students with the many academic and non-academic challenges involved in in academia. These include child care, career services, counseling, Latino outreach, parent resources, tutoring, veterans affairs, a women's resources center, and many more.

Internships

Qualified students may count an internship experience as an elective course. The benefits of such experience include exposure to ideas which could help with career decisions, making contacts which may be useful sometime in the future, and valuable experience in an area that is pertinent to current studies. School of Computing students have received internships with notable companies such as IBM, Hewlett Packard, L-3 Communications Systems, Intel, and Micron. Many of our majors take advantage of this valuable opportunity. Students may receive a general University credit (for more information contact Career Services) or a CS elective credit for an internship tightly aligned to computer science topics (for more information send mail to internships@cs.utah.edu).

Industry and Research Forums

The Industry Forum is an optional, for-credit course usually taken in the junior or senior year. Students engage in presentations from local and national business leaders discussing issues in computing from industry perspectives, trends in computer science, professionalism, ethics, career readiness, lifelong learning, and contemporary issues.

The Research Forum is another optional, for-credit course, intended for students who are interested in pursuing undergraduate research, planning to go to graduate school, and/or curious about the problems that remain unsolved in computer science. Students attend weekly presentations from speakers discussing active research in the School of Computing, other University of Utah departments, local industry, and national laboratories.

The Industry and Research Forums are one-credit each, and may be combined with several other activities to satisfy a three credit CS elective.

Undergraduate Student Advisory Committee (UgSAC)

The School of Computing Undergraduate Student Advisory Committee (UgSAC) is a student group that promotes communication among students and the School of Computing faculty, staff, and administrators.  The UgSAC plays an active role in the School by facilitating student feedback, coordinating student-faculty social events, participating in the RPT (Retention, Promotion, and Tenure) process, and more.

UofU iPhone Programmer's Association

The University of Utah iPhone Programmer's Association (iPA) is is an opportunity for you to meet with others who are developing for this exciting new platform. Membership is FREE, and non-students are welcome!

Society of Women Engineers

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE), founded in 1950, is a not-for-profit educational and service organization. SWE is the driving force that establishes engineering as a highly desirable career aspiration for women. SWE empowers women to succeed and advance in those aspirations and be recognized for their life-changing contributions and achievements as engineers and leaders.

RoboUtes

RoboUtes is an interdisciplinary student organization centered around building robots. Our goals include bringing potential and existing roboticists together, inspiring research projects, building senior project teams, and reaching out to the community (through robotic competitions).
