The Department of Computer Science formally changed its name to the School of
Computing, effective July 1, 2000. Organizationally, the School will continue to
report to the University of Utah administration through the College of
Engineering. Professor Thomas C. Henderson was named Director of the School.
The motivation for the name change is to reflect the broadening of academic
pursuits already underway within the faculty, and to encourage the creation
of multi-disciplinary programs with other university departments. Such efforts,
in both teaching and research, are strengths of the faculty and will be nurtured
with particular attention.
The transformation from department to school is a long-term endeavor of faculty,
staff, students and our community partners. The long-range vision is to:
- Foster an environment that provides inspired, focused people with the
intellectual freedom and the appropriate resources to conduct high caliber
research aimed at creating innovative computer systems and making computers
interface more easily with humans. Such a program provides the educational
environment essential to develop the highest quality graduate and undergraduate programs.
- Deliver high quality degree programs that cover the breadth of computing necessary
to prepare students to compete in local and national markets for computer professionals.
- Serve emerging educational markets for professional programs (certificate programs,
distance education, etc.) and for interdisciplinary programs (for example, Computational
Engineering & Science and Computer Engineering).
- Support industrial interactions that promote open intellectual inquiry and at
the same time contribute to emergent technological development that drives the
local and national economies.
The School faculty recently developed a five-year plan to bring this vision to reality.
Goals include the development of focused academic program for both CS majors and non-majors,
as well as continuing education opportunities.
