To develop a sense of community, the GS Program requires students and faculty to participate in the GS Seminar, a weekly ``research in progress / journal club'' meeting. This series of research meetings will be specifically designed to address topics central to genome science and will include presentations by prominent outside researchers working in genome science. To encourage participation and to increase interaction among students and faculty, the location of these meetings will be changed each academic quarter, rotating among the GS host departments. A faculty member from the GS host department will be responsible for organizing the meeting.
After the initial two-year ramp up period, we anticipate a steady-state
format such as the following.
Each month, a GS student will present his or her
research. Additionally, each month, one student will be responsible for
the journal club, i.e., presenting a paper of relevance to the Utah GS
community. Faculty ``research in progress'' seminars, as well as
postdoctoral research synopses, will also be presented.
This will be augmented by speakers from other institutions.
The latter talks will be partially funded from the NIH Training Grant
(see Section
) and partially from GS host department funds.
The GS Seminar will commence in Winter quarter 1996.
