The recently instituted Program in Computational Engineering and Science (CES) has served as a model for the organization of the GS Program. Its similarities include its certificate basis, sponsorship by multiple departments (Computer Science and Mathematics in the case of CES), and emphasis on enrichment of existing degree programs. In contrast to the CES program, the GS program serves students within rather than external to the sponsoring departments, and serves only doctoral students. Hence there is no project component to the GS program --- instead, this aspect is incorporated in the students' dissertations.
The existence of the CES program is beneficial to the GS program
through its offering of several directly relevant courses, notably
CP SC 520-3 (see Section
).
