GS programs of study are customized by track and by individual student needs. Each track defines a required background, plus a set of courses from which students may choose electives. The intent of each track's curriculum is to provide students with basic knowledge across the subject areas of all host departments of the track, plus more in-depth knowledge in selected subareas. Typically students will, by virtue of admission to their home department's doctoral program, already possess the designated basic knowledge in that department (and perhaps others). In such cases students will elect more advanced courses to fulfill the 15 quarter hour track course requirements.
