I haven't seen this problem myself. Can anyone else shed any light on
this problem?

If not, here are a couple of tests that might help me guess the
problem:

 * Does MzScheme also use 100% of the CPU?

 * If you run

        mred -e "(sleep 10)"

   does MrEd consume all the CPU during the 10-second "sleep"?
