Background
John received his B.S. in Chemistry at the University of Michigan in 1968. He received his M.S. in Mathematics at the University of Michigan in 1969 and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT in 1975. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT in 1978.
