Outreach Activities

The High School Computing Institute (HSCI) is a program of study designed to interest and challenge outstanding Utah high school sophomores and juniors wishing to explore areas of interest in computer science. Over the past ten years, the Computer Science Department in the College of Engineering at the University of Utah has hosted the HSCI. The institute is designed to give selected high school students the opportunity to expand their horizons and to give them a "behind the scenes" look at some tools that are on the leading edge of computer technology.

The University of Utah's Student Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) conducts an annual High school programming contest. Teams of four students from Utah high schools have several weeks to complete a substantial programming problem before coming to campus for a day in March. During the contest, participants use state-of-the-art engineering workstations as they race to complete a set of five programming problems in C++.

Tours for school groups and other can be arranged by contacting Ann Torrence at torrence@cs.utah.edu or 801-581-7631.
