Buying a Permit

Parking at the U can be a nightmare, especially during the first two weeks of school. Luckily, we are located right next to one of the larger parking lots at the University. Provided you purchase a "U" parking pass, you will only need to walk across the parking lot, not the entire campus.
To buy a parking permit, your car will first need to pass Utah's inspection and emissions tests. If your car is registered in Utah, you have already passed these tests. If your car is registered in another state, you are fine as long as your state has both inspections and emissions testing. If one or both are not required, you will need to pass these tests in Utah before you can purchase a permit.
You can purchase a parking permit at the Department of Parking and Transportation, Building 436, which is on the other side of South Campus Drive from the Huntsman Center. Call (801) 581-6415 for directions.
Parking Services sells permits for single semesters and the entire academic year. Hint: Sometime in the summer, the next academic year's parking permits go on sale. You might be able to save some money by waiting until that day and then buying the next year's permit, if you arrive in the summer.

Types of Permits

There are three main types of parking permits: A, U, and E. "A" parking permits have the best spaces, but are only available to staff and faculty. Students can choose to purchase a "U" or "E" permit. An "E" permit is cheaper, but then you have fewer lots to park in. "U" permits can park in both "U" and "E" lots. The main lot next to MEB is mainly a "U" parking lot (with the first few rows designated at "A"). I'd recommend that you purchase a "U" permit, because it's nearly impossible to get an "E" space during the first few weeks of school, in which case you will need to park on the other side of campus and take the shuttle to MEB.
Even with a "U" permit, parking will be hard to find in the first few weeks of school. The best bet is to either arrive earlier in those weeks, or time your arrival for the break between classes. Or you can take the bus... this year your University ID serves as a free bus pass.
"U" parking permits can be used to park in the MEB "A" spaces, and "E" in "U" spaces, after 3 pm.
Just for reference, the other types of parking permits are "S" (for those who live in Austin, Ballif, or Van Cott Residence Halls; equivalent to an "E" permit otherwise), "M" (for motorcycles, but then the motorcycles can only be parked in specially marked motorcycle spaces), and "D" (for disabled spaces in "A", "U", or "E" lots, or also in any regular parking meters without payment).

Parking Enforcement

Finally, parking regulations are enforced year-round from 7 am - 6 pm in the MEB lot, Mondays through Fridays, except for state holidays (this exception does NOT include school holidays, such as spring break). Parking meters are enforced from 8 am - 6 pm, Mondays through Fridays.
