International Workshop on
Advanced Transaction Models and Architectures (ATMA)
Goa, India
August 31-September 2, 1996
In conjunction with VLDB'96 Conference
=====================================================================
Recent years have witnessed an increasing interest in transaction
processing systems. Traditional transaction processing techniques, developed
in the framework of relational database systems, have been continually
improved to meet high performance requirements of high volume transaction
processing applications. Moreover, traditional transaction models have been
extended to deal with requirements from new applications and environments,
such as workflow management, security, real-time, and new data models and
paradigms, such as the object-oriented data model and active databases. The
aim of this workshop, held in conjunction with the VLDB'96 conference, is to
bring together leading researchers and practitioners currently working on
various aspects and issues of transaction models and systems.
TOPICS:
-------
We solicit papers describing original ideas and new results on the
foundations, applications, and development of transaction systems.
Suggested topics include but are not limited to:
- Transaction benchmarks
- Transaction design (chopping transactions, use of formal specifications)
- Advances in transaction systems for relational DBMS
- Transactions for object systems
- Transactions for active database systems
- Workflow transaction models and flexible transaction models
- Tool-kit approaches to transactions
- Transactions in file systems
- Transaction processing monitors
- Transactions in multilevel secure database systems
- Transactions in real-time database systems
- Transactions in heterogeneous database systems
- Transactions in client-server architectures
- Transactions in main-memory databases
- Semantic transaction scheduling, evaluation and processing
- Transactions in WWW and in Electronic Commerce
The primary focus is on high-quality original unpublished research, case
studies and implementation experiences. We encourage submissions of
papers discussing industrial research and development.

WORKSHOP VENUE:
---------------
The workshop will be held in the city of Goa.
A land of unsurpassed beauty and tranquility - that's Goa!. It has been
noted for its historical and cultural landmarks, picturesque villages
and lovely beaches. Once known as the "Rome of the Orient", its
towering, magnificent, historical churches, convents, monasteries and
Living Shrine of the Basilica of Bom Jesus, resting the sacred relics
of St. Francis Xavier, the Patron of Goa recalls its former days of
power, pomp, and splendor. The churches in Velha Goa are monuments
of ancient art and architecture which are preserved for posterity, study
and pleasure. Besides churches, the finest Hindu temples in Ponda with
their chiselled architecture, glittering chandeliers, distinctive lamp
towers, and sacred water tanks are worth seeing. Having entrenched
themselves in Goa for over 450 years, the Portuguese greatly
influenced Goan cuisine leaving behind a number of typical Portuguese
dishes. But the Goans also evolved many delicacies of their own.
Goa lies approximately 400 km south of Bombay, which puts it at
approximately the same latitude of Hawaii, Acapulco, and Barbados.
The state of Goa occupies a territory of approximately 3700 sq. kms.
Its west coast is flanked by the Indian ocean, while the east is bordered
by the "Ghats", a rocky plateau. Goa does not have an international
airport, but it does have a domestic airport that links it with most
major cities in India. Its airport is located at Dabolim, which is
about 30 km from Goa's capital, Panjim. A flight from Bombay to Goa
takes about 45 minutes. A one way flight between Bombay and Goa
costs around $60.
