    ============                                       Panels

6th European Symposium on Research in Computer Security

                October 4-6, 2000, Toulouse, France

Organised by ONERA Centre de Toulouse
                                      with CNAMTS-CESSI and LAAS-CNRS.

Computer security is concerned with the protection of information in
environments where there is a possibility of intrusion or malicious
action. The aim of the European Symposium on Research in Computer
Security (ESORICS) is to further the progress of research in computer
security by establishing a European forum for bringing together
researchers in this area, by promoting the exchange of ideas with
system developers and users and by encouraging links with researchers
in related areas.
Organised in a series of European countries, ESORICS is confirmed as
the European research event in computer security. The symposium
started in 1990 in Toulouse (France) and is now held every two years
in different European countries and attracts audience from both the
academic and industrial communities. Since 1992 previous editions of
ESORICS have been in Toulouse (France), Brighton (United Kingdom),
Roma (Italy), Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium).

                              Topics
                              ======

We solicit papers describing original ideas and new results on the
foundations and applications of computer security. The primary focus
is on high-quality original unpublished research, case studies and
implementation experiences. We encourage submissions of papers
discussing industrial research and development. Suggested topics
include but are not limited to:

* Theoretical Foundations of Security: security models and
specifications, formal logic, formal development techniques.
* Operating Systems Security: access control, security models,
   protection mechanisms, new OS paradigms.
* Distributed Systems: client/server models, distributed object
systems, distributed audit, multi-domain distributed systems.
* Network Security: authentication, key management, multilevel secure
   networks.
* Telecommunications and High Speed Network Security: security and
quality of service, ATM firewalls, security of new communication
   protocols, EDI.
* Internet Security: firewalls, IP v6, secure authentication,
   privacy, anonymity.
* Security and mobile systems: Java, ActiveX, certification for
   mobile code.
* Security in Data and Knowledge Bases: access and inference
controls, secure DBMS, transaction management, integrity.
* Development of Secure Systems: security requirement engineering,
software development environment, high assurance software.
* Management of Secure Systems: liability, accountability, auditing,
   intrusion detection, administration tools.
* Electronic Commerce: electronic cash, electronic wallets, fund
   transfer, Internet commerce.
* Security of small systems: PDA, smart card, embedded systems.
* Intellectual Property Protection: software protection,
watermarking, pay-per-view, network distribution of software.
* Multimedia and Digital Libraries: access control, information flow
control, security of indexes and directories.
* New applications of Cryptography: steganography, subliminal
   channels.
* Security versus other Requirements: security and costs, risk
analysis, security policy design, safety, availability,
   survivability.
* Security Evaluation: criteria, evaluation techniques and tools,
   security testing, penetration analysis.

                           Instruction to Authors
                           ======================

Paper proposals should be limited to 6000 words, full page figures
being counted as 300 words. Each paper must include a short abstract
and a list of keywords. Since special sessions will be devoted to
posters and demonstrations, it should be indicated in the paper
submission if a demonstration can accompany the paper presentation. A
call for posters and demonstrations will be published with the
preliminary program.

Panel proposals should include title, proposed chair, tentative
panelists, a 2 or 3 paragraph description of the subject, format of
the presentation, and rationale for the panel.

Papers and panels must be submitted in English. For multi-authored
submission, the contact author should be indicated. Selection will be
based on originality and contribution to the field.

As much as possible, submission should be made under electronic form.

Authors are invited to submit by e-mail as a PostScript or PDF file
attachment the papers and panel proposals before March 15, 2000.

Enclosed with their electronic submission, authors are also asked to
send an email (in ASCII) with the title of the paper, author name(s),
affiliations, mailing address, phone number, fax number, a maximum
150-word abstract and keywords.

If an electronic submission is not possible, the abstract should be
submitted by fax and 6 hard copies of the paper should be sent so as
to be received by the above deadlines.

Electronic submission must be sent by e-mail to:
   Frederic.Cuppens@cert.fr

Hard copy submission must be sent at the following address:

and distributed to the participants. It is anticipated that the
proceedings will be published by Springer-Verlag under the Lecture
Notes in Computer Science series, as in the previous editions of
ESORICS.
Authors of the best papers will be invited to submit extended versions
of their paper for a special issue planned for the Journal of Computer
Security.
