DESCRIPTION
Computer security is often treated as an endpoint issue. This is a
growing concern as the explosive growth of networking technology
continues to redefine rules for maintaining the privacy and integrity
of electronic data. The massive surge of interest in the Internet,
along with the emerging use of low-cost residential broadband
networking for homes and small enterprises, has created the need for a
concentrated study of networking security practices. Larger
enterprises can typically afford technical experts to configure their
networks with firewalls and other security devices to provide a
desired level of security. Smaller enterprises (homes, small
businesses, etc.), however, often do not have the technical expertise
or the financial resources needed to create and maintain a level of
security suitable for the emerging broadband environment. This
special issue will focus attention on the integration of networking
and endpoint security. It will pull together both IP and ATM
networking security strategies and examine methods that will allow
homes and offices to safely explore the opportunities provided by a
"connected" environment. Papers are solicited on the topics described
above. Topics including the emerging broadband networking environment,
IP and ATM security, integrated security strategies, and security
analysis are of particular interest.
