Call for Papers and panels
ESORICS 98
5th European Symposium on Research in Computer Security
Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, September 16-18, 1998
Organised by Universite Catholique de Louvain
in ccoperation with Katholieke Universiteit Leuven
Computer security is concerned with the protection of information in
environments where there is a possibility of intrusion or malicious action.
The aim of the European Symposia on Research in Computer Security (ESORICS)
is to further the progress of research in computer security by establishing
a European forum for bringing together researchers in this area, by promoting
the exchange of ideas with system developers and users and by encouraging
links with researchers in related areas.
Progressively organised in a series of European countries, ESORICS is
confirmed as the European research event in computer security. The symposia
started in 1990 in Toulouse (France) and is now held every two years in
different European countries and attracts audience from both the academic
and industrial communities. Previous editions of ESORICS have been in
Toulouse (France), Brighton (United Kingdom) and Roma (Italy). In 1998,
ESORICS will be held in Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium).
TOPICS: We solicit papers describing original ideas and new results on the
foundations and applications of the computer security area.
Suggested topics include but are not limited to:
- Theoretical Foundations of Security - security models and specifications,
formal logic and information theory, formal development techniques, ...
- Operating Systems Security - access control, security models, protection
mechanisms, new OS paradigms, ...
- Distributed Systems - client/server models, distributed object systems,
distributed audit, multi-domain distributed systems, ...
- Network Security - authentication, key management, multilevel secure
networks, ...
- Internet Security - firewalls, IP v6, secure authentication, privacy,
anonymity, ...
- Telecommunications and High Speed Network Security - security and quality
of service, ATM firewalls, security of new communication protocols, EDI, ...
- Security and mobile code: Java, ActiveX, certification for mobile code, ...
- Security in Data and Knowledge Bases - multilevel secure DBMS, transaction
management, integrity, ...
- Management of Secure Systems - liability, accountability, auditing, intrusion
detection, administration tools, ...
- Electronic Commerce - electronic cash, electronic wallets, fund transfer,
Internet commerce, ...
- Intellectual Property Protection - software protection, watermarking,
pay-per-view, network distribution of software, ...
- Multimedia and Digital Libraries - access control, information flow control,
security of indexes and directories, ...
- Development of Secure Systems - security requirement engineering, software
development environment, high assurance software, ...
- New applications of Cryptography: steganography, subliminal channels, ...
- Security versus other Requirements - security and costs, risk analysis,
security policy design, safety, availability, ...
- Security Evaluation - criteria, evaluation techniques and tools, security
testing, penetration analysis, ...
The primary focus is on high-quality original unpublished research, case
studies and implementation experiences. We encourage submissions of papers
discussing industrial research and development.
INSTRUCTIONS: Authors are invited to submit papers and panel proposals
before February 28, 1998. The text must be submitted in English.
Papers should be limited to 6000 words, full page figures being counted as 300
words. Each paper must include a short abstract and a list of keywords. Since
special sessions will be devoted to posters and demonstrations, it should be
indicated in the paper submission if a demonstration can accompany the paper
presentation. A call for posters and demonstrations will be published with
the preliminary program.
Panel proposals should include title, proposed chair, tentative panelists,
a 2 or 3 paragraph description of the subject, format of the presentation,
and rationale for the panel.
Six hard copies of papers and panel proposals must be received
before February 28, 1998, at the following address:
Yves Deswarte
ESORICS 98 PC Chair
LAAS-CNRS
7 avenue du Colonel Roche
31077 Toulouse cedex 4, France
Tel. +33 (0) 5 61 33 62 88 Fax: +33 (0) 5 61 33 64 11
In parallel with hard copy paper submission, an electronic (ASCII) copy
of the paper abstract and key words must be sent by e-mail to:
Yves.Deswarte@laas.fr
An electronic version of the papers or panel proposals may also be sent to
the same e-mail address, but the hard copy submission is mandatory.
IMPORTANT DATES:
Deadline for submission: February 28, 1998
Notification of acceptance or rejection: May 15, 1998
Final camera-ready due: June 15, 1998
Selection will be based on originality and contribution to the field. The
proceedings consisting of the accepted papers will be published and
distributed to the participants. It is anticipated that the proceedings will
be published by Springer-Verlag under the Lecture Notes in Computer Science
series, as in the previous editions of ESORICS.
Authors of the best papers will be invited to submit extended versions of their
paper for a special issue planned for the Journal of Computer Security.
