The Department of Computer Science offers a minor for students who desire to gain sufficient background to use and program computers in another field. In addition, a Teaching Minor is offered in conjunction with the College of Education for students who desire to gain sufficient background to teach computer science at the secondary school level.
A limited number of students are admitted into the minor program each year. In order to be admitted, a student must have a declared major in another department and be making progress in that major. The maximum number of students accepted into the minor is determined by the faculty on an annual basis and is currently about 10. Priority is given to students wishing to pursue a Teaching Minor.
The admission process is similar to that for majors and is carried out at the same time. Students compete for admission based on grades in Math 1210 or 111, English writing, and Computer Science 2010/2020 or 201/202. In order to be accepted, the GPA in these classes must exceed that of students admitted into full-major status that year.
The minor consists of a minimum of 17.5 semester hours of computer science classes. (For the purposes of this requirement, a quarter hour counts as two-thirds of a semester hour.)

Computer science minors are guaranteed admission into only the upper division classes that comprise their minor. They are not allowed to take computer science classes numbered 4000 or above. Students in the minor will not be able to do phone registration for upper division classes; they must add them through the undergraduate office each semester.
