Brian Smits

Research Assistant Professor of Computer Science
Ph.D., Cornell, 1994

Professor Smits joined the Faculty in 1998. He is interested in image synthesis, both photo-realistic and perceptually accurate. Photo-realistic image synthesis requires the efficient and accurate propagation of light through environments that are potentially very complex. This propagation has two main components, the transfer between two surfaces, and the interaction of light with a surface. Perceptually accurate image synthesis requires presenting enough information to allow a task to be performed. This may include object recognition, object location, navigation. It also includes the creation of believable, if not physically accurate, images.
