Objectives

The degree of Master of Engineering in Computer Science is administered and conferred by the College of Engineering in conjunction with the Department of Computer Science. This program provides opportunity for individuals with some computer background to train themselves for technical professional positions in industry and government.

The M.E. in Computer Science Program is designed to:

Provide the student with fundamental tools for the analysis and design of computer systems.
Develop within the student a sound understanding of these tools.
Provide flexibility in course selection to allow the student's program to be structured to individual needs and interests.
Provide a stronger tie between industrial or government employees and departmental research programs.

A major objective of the program is to offer professional development opportunities to non-traditional students of high caliber. Such persons gain by studying state-of-the-art theories and methods in Computer Science, in a strong academic environment, with support from the excellent resources of the Department of Computer Science, the College of Engineering, and the University of Utah. In turn, students in other degree programs and the faculty gain by association with mature professionals who understand the technical needs of their organizations and provide a source of significant computing problems.
