The M.E. degree requires the completion of 45 hours of approved course work. Courses submitted for credit must have grades of at least B-, with at least a 3.0 grade point average. A minimum of 36 hours must be taken at the University of Utah. At least 3 and not more than 9 credit hours be a single independent study project (CS690 registration) undertaken with faculty supervision, involving a proposal and final report. A formal thesis is not required. (Students interested in a thesis option should apply to the Master of Science degree.)
The candidate must draft a program of study in the first quarter as a fully matriculated student. This program is planned in consultation with the student's advisor and must be approved by the Graduate Studies Committee. Programs of study must include at least 27 credit hours of courses from the Department of Computer Science. Up to 18 credit hours may be approved from allied fields, such as Mathematics or Electrical Engineering. All courses taken for M.E. credit must be at the 500 level or above, and CS501, CS502, and CS503 are excluded for credit.
Normally, not more than 12 credit hours taken during non-matriculated status may be applied to the degree. All course work offered for the degree must be completed within four consecutive years, as required by the University.
