Entrance Requirements

Admission depends upon the recommendation of the Admissions Committee and upon the quality of previous work in Computer Science. No single criterion will be used as a basis for determining admission into the program. Applicants are strongly encouraged to take the Advanced Computer Science and Aptitude Graduate Record Examinations as a means of demonstrating their background in computer science to the Admissions Committee. Students wishing to refresh their understanding of contemporary computer science before taking the GRE may apply through the Division of Continuing Education for admission as non-matriculated students in order to attain such a background. CS501, CS502, and CS503 are courses designed for this purpose offered by the department.

Some other factors which the committee will consider are:

1. Experience in a computer related field.

2. Undergraduate grade point average.

3. Undergraduate major field and school.

4. Graduate grade point average, if any.

5. Relationship of goals to current departmental research.

6. Availability of departmental resources.

Each student must have a complete admissions file compiled at the office of the Director of Graduate Studies, the Department of Computer Science, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah 84112, thirty days prior to registration. The complete admissions file consists of:

1. A completed Application for Admissions to the Graduate School form.

2. Two official copies of each transcript from each university attended. These copies must be requested to be sent directly from the school concerned to the Admissions Office.

3. Graduate Record Examination score, if taken.

4. The required evaluation fee in check or money order made payable to the University of Utah. (This fee is waived for students currently enrolled at the University of Utah).

5. A personal and professional goals statement.

6. A letter of recommendation from a current faculty member. This faculty member must agree to supervise the student's program and to act as the chair of the supervisory committee.

Entry to the department's M.S. and Ph.D. graduate program does not guarantee entry to the M.E. Program and vice versa; admission to each program is considered separately.
