Abstract
As visualization is becoming a well established scientific discipline,
the research community is discussing the value and the future of
visualization. While those considerations are necessary for the
development of our field and for funding perspectives, we should not
forget that many of us are also driven by the joy which we get out of
working in our field. For me this joy results from the broad variety
of challenges and projects that can be pursued at different time
scales. We can perform long-term research improving mathematically
involved algorithms and we can work on short-term implementations
driven by dynamic hardware technology. Combining both can result in
applications which are economically relevant and useful for society. I
will give several examples from research performed in the
Visualization and Interactive Systems group at the University of
Stuttgart. They include a summary of our contributions to volume
visualization with a focus on recent results, some experiences with a
commercially successful flow visualization tool, and our attempts to
employ graphics techniques for those who cannot see.
