CS 5965, Spring 2008
Innovation Protection for Engineers and Scientists

Monday, 6:00-7:45 PM, 3147 MEB
Professor Lee A. Hollaar

This spring, the School of Computing is offering a new special topics course, CS 5965-001 "Innovation Protection for Engineers and Scientists." Related to our current "Legal Protection of Digital Information" offering, this course has an increased emphasis on patent protection, especially for electrical and mechanical devices and chemical compositions and processes. As the United States considers joining the rest of the world with "first inventor to file" system, it is even more important for engineers and scientists to understand how to effectively use the patent system to protect their innovations.

The course also covers copyright law as it applies to technical activities, such as research publication, as will as provide some familiarity with the current Internet copyright disputes. Related topics, such as trade secrets and contracts arel also be covered.

The course is taught by Professor Lee Hollaar, who is also a registered patent agent and holds three patents with other applications pending, all of which he wrote and prosecuted. He has been a technical expert or consultant in a number of high-profile technology cases, and has been an advisor to Congress on patent and copyright matters.
