Course Syllabus (Postscript, PDF)

This course provides an introduction to computer networks and data communication protocols. It will include some programming projects, but they won't be as intense as the OS class historically has been, for example.

Textbook
The textbook is Peterson and Davie's Computer Networks: A Systems Approach, Second Edition. The publisher maintains an Errata list.

A less expensive place to buy it new is bookpool.com. I have not personally used them, but they're highly rated and I've seen reputable people point there. Amazon, Powells, and half.com have a number of used copies. Make sure you get the 2nd edition and caveat emptor. Here's a meta site.

Sockets Information
Pocket Guide to TCP/IP Socket Programming in C, by Donahoo and Calvert. This is a good but optional reference book for socket programming. It would be useful for the projects.

RPI Sockets Tutorial (strongly recommended)
Jim Frost's BSD Sockets Primer (recommended; sockets by analogy to telephones)
Berkeley UNIX System Calls and Interprocess Communication, L. Besaw, with revisions by M. Solomon (recommended; this is the only one of these tutorials that contains info on select(); see section 4.2)
UNIX Socket FAQ Huge FAQ on socket programming. Search here if you have specific socket programming problems.
