What
The GREAT Summer Camp is about having fun while learning amazing tools to unleash your creativity. The first part of the week will teach you how to build and tell a story in your own interactive 3D world. The second part of the week will have you working together in teams building robots to compete in a robot showdown. Together, GREAT is about learning how computer science approaches to problem solving can lead to creative and exciting applications.

Who
You of course! Specifically girls and boys entering 8th thru 10th grade the 09-10 school year. There are only 15 slots available per session, so register today.

The Program
The Camp will run from 9AM-3PM

Lunch will be provided!

The GREAT Summer Camp will show how computer science concepts in computation, problem solving, and abstraction can lead to rewarding and exciting applications - computer science is not about "sitting in front of a screen", it is about creativity, communication, and working together to solve problems. No prior experience is required, just enthusiasm! During camp we will use two recently developed programming platforms that are fun and challenging. These platforms are:

Alice 3D Programming Environment

LEGO Mindstrom NXT Robotics

The Instructors
David Johnson is a SoC research scientist in computer graphics, virtual reality, and robotics. He first taught at a computer camp as a high school sophomore, and currently teaches graduate courses in robotics and virtual reality. He was the main graphics lecturer from 1997-2002 for the previous SoC summer camps. Dr. Johnson also reaches out to various Utah schools for students to compete in robotics competition clubs, including ones using the Mindstorms robotics kits.

Erin Parker is instructional faculty at the SoC, teaching courses ranging from the impact of computers on society to compilers. Her research background is in computer memory systems and performance. Lately, she has been investigating computer science education and the development of tools and techniques for introductory courses, including the ALICE system.
