Have you watched a 3D animated movie and thought that character was really cool? Have you played a video game and wondered how they made that amazingly scary, bad guy character? Have you thought up your own coolest, toughest, wickedest, or sweetest character that anyone could imagine?
Then the EAE Summer Program is where you will get a chance to make your very own 3D animated character.
The Program
The University of Utah's School of Computing is pleased to offer the Entertainment Arts and Engineering Summer Program (EAESP) in computer graphics for high school students. EAESP combines theory with practical projects, enabling students to understand computer graphics at a high level. The EAESP will introduce high school students to the concepts of 3D modeling, texturing, rigging, animation, and rendering, using some of the most advanced software in the industry such as Autodesk Maya and Adobe Photoshop.
The Work
Working alone and in groups, students will use the University of Utah's School of Computing's latest computing technologies and facilities, and will visit various research laboratories in the School. They also will take fieldtrips to local game and modeling studios. As they work to complete their final projects, they will be guided through the various sequential production pipeline steps necessary to produce high-caliber work. Students will design and create their own 3-D character scratch with their work culminating in a character-based animation short.
The Instructor
The class will be taught by
Mark van Langeveld who pioneered this summer program at the University of Pennsylvania in 2004 and has been offering it every year since
then. Mark is currently a PhD graduate student in the School of Computing, having graduated in Computer Graphics Design from UCLA and was the first graduate of the Computer Graphics and Game Technology engineering program at the University of Pennsylvania. His passion is to teach computer graphics and he has done so for over seven years at UCLA, San Francisco Academy of Art, and University of Pennsylvania..
The Dates
The two week summer program is scheduled for June 9 through June 20, 2008. It will run all day, Monday through Friday from 9 to 4:30.
The Cost
The cost will be $125 per student which will include course materials, supplies, access to computing facilities, and lunch. Due to limited laboratory space, we will only be able to accept a maximum of 30 students. Note, a few scholarships will be available to those who qualify based on need.
