As part of the new Computing Degree Program, the School of Computing at the University of Utah now offers a specialized graduate track in Computer Graphics and Visualization. This track in the degree program encourages students to pursue area-specific coursework and advanced research at an early stage of their graduate study. Aimed at maximizing a studentÍs learning opportunities and research experiences, this track engages students in research activities as soon as possible. The new Computer Graphics and Visualization degree track draws heavily on the many faculty and excellent facilities that have contributed to making Utah one of the nation's top-ranked graphics programs. (Utah was among the top five in the latest US News and World Report's rankings of graphics programs.)
The graphics program at the School of Computing is quite comprehensive, with research efforts in most areas of computer graphics, including geometric modeling, CAD/CAM, scientific visualization, biomedical visualization, computer vision, terrain modeling and rendering, haptics (force-feedback), realistic rendering, digital geometry processing, point-based graphics, immersive environments, and non-photorealistic rendering. We have a graphics faculty of 15 members active in the program, all of whom run successful, well-funded research programs. Creating a unique environment, the significant size and broad scope of the program provide students access to state-of-the-art equipment and an exciting intellectual atmosphere. We teach a wide variety of graphics-related courses complemented with many interesting and stimulating topics in a plethora of seminars, research talks, and invited colloquia.
Since the 1960s when pioneering graphics research became a core focus at Utah, there has been a vibrant congenial community supporting this activity. Being one of the oldest and most successful graphics programs in the nation, Utah and its alums have played a prominent role in the birth and explosive development of computer graphics.
ADMISSIONS
We offer MS and Ph.D. degrees in Computing in the Computer Graphics and Visualization Track. Undergraduate degrees in engineering, science, applied mathematics or computer science are all excellent backgrounds to apply to the program. A strong mathematical background is an asset for rapid advancement in the program. Inasmuch as the requisite skills will be taught, advanced programming skills, or other specific, relevant technical aspects are desirable but not required for admission. Financial support is typically offered to students through teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and fellowships, with Ph.D. applicants having priority. Admission is based on an evaluation of an applicant's academic profile and potential for performing creative and important research. We especially encourage applications from women and members of underrepresented groups.
CURRICULUM
The fundamentals of computer graphics and visualization are covered in three core courses (see specifics for M.S. and Ph.D. degree requirements). Other computer Graphics and Visualization courses are selected by the student to tailor the program of study toward particular research topics or interests. Interdisciplinary research is a strong theme in our program, and many opportunities exist to prepare a student to pursue a wide variety of directions and connections in Computer Graphics and Visualization, and to broadly approach many technical problems of importance to society.
